Yes, you're right, I stand corrected, although it was April 1995, not 1994. I only just acquired all these CDs recently, been great going through them all again... |

I don't suppose anybody knows if it's okay to rip ISOs of them (or add the contents to an archive) and stick 'em online? I don't see why not, since the CDs are freely distributable, and it would be a great help to the RISC OS community to be able to have access to the entire collection. Sadly I never had the full set to begin with, and I seem to have somehow lost several of them in the years since, otherwise I'd do it myself.

It is sad that these are no longer available. There are some of us that have never seen them.

A list of RISC OS images - provided as a reference listing of extant RISC OS CDs only, not intended for public consumption. Any links contained on that page are purely for internal use.

Well, I started the process. I ransacked my cupboards and quickly made some ISOs, although I can't find lots of discs that I know I ought to still have - AUCD 1 and 2, for example - but it's a start. Contributions are welcome! Anything that shouldn't be up, let me know.
http://filth.ath.cx/riscosdisks/index.html (URL changed, see post above)
Oh, and incidentally, that server isn't always running, but generally you can expect to see it vaguely between 6am - 10pm GMT. They all appear to 404 at the moment |

Wonderful timing, you caught me in the two seconds where I decided to change the URL (because of the discs/disks thing). Try again |

You probably need to add a mime type for .iso for some reason, IIS7 generates a 404 error when there is no mime type for the file being accessed.
Head into IIS Manager, Default Website, MIME Types.
At least, this was the problem I had! Hope this helps! |

You probably need to add a mime type for .iso Yep, that came to me in my dreams last night - IIS won't properly parse unknown filetypes. I've added it as application/octet-stream so it ought to work now. HTTP and FTP are clunky and horrid, though; I can set up a torrent if there's any demand (although I'm lazy, so Azureus users can get a magnet link). |

Wonder who did the voices... Maybe they're taken from films, e.g. "Uzi 9mm" in another RISC OS game (whose title escapes me).
...it would be a great help to the RISC OS community to be able to have access to the entire collection. Games could possibly be added to The Qube RiscOS FTP Server. (I think I'll end up either reinstalling RO3.5 + ARM610 or investigating Aemulor on the BeagleBoard!) |

If there is anything there that shouldn't be, please let me know, I'll get it removed ASAP! (And Jason said something similar earlier in the thread).
TBH, I suspect that what shouldn't be there in both cases is going to be "most of it" - almost certainly in the form you have published it, even if most of the applications on those discs have licences that permit free distribution. |

Well, while I wait for the inevitable inflow of legal demands to remove, the collection just keeps on growing - but I'm just editing my original post, so remember to keep checking back at it. |

Well, while I wait for the inevitable inflow of legal demands to remove I'm sure there's some form of irony in demanding that PD be removed.. Agreed that the notion sounds ironic, but it's not as simple as that.
Firstly, what they're distributing are ISO images of the CDs themselves, which contain (so-called) public domain software. While the software might be licenced for free distribution, that doesn't mean the CDs themselves are. It sounds daft, but it's true - so whether an APDL CD filled to the brim with 'public domain' software can itself be copied and made available in full depends on what licence Dave Holden has published that CD under.
Secondly, is all the software contained on all those CDs actually 'public domain'? It's likely that all the software on the APDL CDs falls into that category - but what of the other discs? The AU discs may contain material that they held the copyright for, and which is now in the hands of Qercus, for example.
In fact I can confirm that there is at least one item on one of the CDs that isn't, since the copyright owner gave specific permission for its use on that CD. There may actually be more, but I can't remember offhand. Do your own detective work if you can be arsed to find out what - but your clue is that the copyright owner in question is (obviously) me, and it's an old version that I long since made available for free anyway. (Note: that's not 'public domain' or any licence that permits free distribution.)
(So I'm not actually complaining or demanding it's taken down. I'm just pointing out that the legality isn't a simple case of "It's PD so I can make it available".) |

I'm more of the opinion that "Unless you're making a specific complaint, I don't really care, because I don't see how 10-15 year old software can hurt current sales in this specific market, if any, and so therefore I'm not going to bother doing anything about it and even if there is a complaint and I take it down today, enough people have leeched stuff that you'd have to take legal action against me, and I'm based outside of the UK so that would actually be more time, cost and effort than it's actually worth."
No offence, I respect the effort you (and other authors) have put into your software, and I respect your right to protect your own intellectual property and so on, but this is frankly a collection of museum pieces suited to little more than fetishists and retro nerds. |

I totally agree with Jason's stance. I think it's ringing the last drops of life out of the platform trying to make new versions of the OS etc.
Embracing it as a retro platform would give it a new lease of life. I've had loads of comments and messages on my youtube videos asking where to get old machines and games to relive the games they played at school or at friends house etc. |

Not the traditional market (here, buy a copy of DarkWood for £40) but a whole bunch of 59ps from the iPhone's app store? Got to be a bit of cash in that! |

A lot of my friends are hardcore gamers and some of them even fancy getting a system. An A3010 or a RISC PC just to sample the games we had.
Stuff like Star Fighter 3000, Stunt Racer 2000, Elite etc carry more than enough interest and quality to attract people who play games on other platforms. Put SR 2000 on a nice HD 1.6 disk in a small collectable box and put it out at say 3.99 to £5.
Retrogaming is a pretty big scene now, the 8-bits still do well from it and they have new releases of games(on tape and even 5 1/4 disk) and hardware.
I just think the days of some well paid bloke paying 500 to 1000 for new hardware and software are long gone.

I'm more of the opinion that "Unless you're making a specific complaint [...] more time, cost and effort than it's actually worth." And I actually agree. I'm merely pointing out that it's not a simple case - as Andrew suggested with his observation of the irony - that it's "PD" so it's okay. Legally, it's not so simple.
No offence, I respect the effort you (and other authors) have put into your software, and I respect your right to protect your own intellectual property and so on, but this is frankly a collection of museum pieces suited to little more than fetishists and retro nerds. Again, I agree.
The main reason I've tended not to permit redistribution in most cases* (there are rare exceptions**), even if it's something I make available for free - is just so that I could make sure the version freely available is always the most recent, and not some antique version which is ten years older than the one I'm making available.
And that just so I can avoid the inevitable contact from people reporting bugs in a ten year old item that I'd fixed five years ago. Or whatever.
* Slight annoyance over the years was certain magazines listing Soft Rock Software as a PD library, which it never has been, and describing freebies I've released as PD, which they never were. On the other hand, when whichever one it was did it month after month after month, it actually helped my sales with the number of people enquiring about the PD software, being told there isn't any, and then going on to buy stuff.
** The closest I've come to releasing something with a public domain tag is describing the release as something like "in the manner of PD software". |

Incidentally, I've put up a few more, one of which "Contains Confidential Material!" I'd be curious to know if it really is as confidential - nowadays - as it claims. |

I've just ripped the CD's I have to hand. These are;
Acorn User Collectors CD (2 CD's) Bike Ride 2 (2 CD's) Foundation RISC User Kosovo Orphans Appeal RISC User in a nutshell The Datafile (CD's 3,4 & 5)
You can download them from here; http://www.riscosuser.co.uk/iso Anyone got a mirror for these ones yet? The site appears to be pretty much bogged down.. Averaging 600 bytes/sec right now |
