Hello
I am looking to buy a boxed original copy of Archimedes Elite Gold Edition (ideally in good condition).
If you have one for sale - or know where I can get one please let me know. You can email me directly on jrbeamer at gmail dot com
I am willing to pay an excellent price for this game. You won't be disappointed
Thanks John |

There's also the 'Wanted' postings in the Free Ads. But TBH you may get a better response here in any case. I've got the Hybrid version (plastic box IIRC) - it's probably not the original edition and I'm sorry but it's not for sale anyway. Hope you find what you want. |

I've got the Hybrid version (plastic box IIRC) - it's probably not the original edition Hybrid was the company who produced ArcElite for RISC OS. There were two versions of the plastic box - normal and "Gold Edition", the latter having some extras added in. Other companies published it for other platforms, with different content (Firebird's port for the Amiga, for example, with a ship identification chart instead of ArcElite Gold's ship datacards). The only other 'official' release of ArcElite was when it was given out on the August '97 cover disc of Acorn User with the copy protection stripped away. |

That said, now that I think about it, I might have a second copy lurking around in a box somewhere. I'll have a check in the next few days. Is it okay if it's just ArcElite and not the Gold Edition? If I find it, I can take some comparative photos to highlight the difference.
What I'd really like is one of those Elite pins that were given out as competition prizes for the BBC version back in the '80s... and if I had the resources, I'd make/order myself one. |

Not ArcElite, but I've a boxed BBC 5.25" Disc copy of Elite. I wonder what it's worth £50? |

Not ArcElite, but I've a boxed BBC 5.25" Disc copy of Elite. I wonder what it's worth £50? I also have boxed BBC and Acorn Electron versions (both on cassette), as well as some random PC and Amiga versions - if they were worth £50 each I'd have sold them off some time ago ;-)
I think I also have software-only copies of pretty much every version, including some of the rarer ones out there, such as TNK and Darkness Falls (both by Pinder and Bell). I remember there was some sort of furore at the time about Pinder being a pseudonym of Bell's. |

In other news, I did manage to dig out my copies of Elite. I have ArcElite, ArcElite Gold, BBC Elite and Electron Elite, as well as some random stuff from a copy of Spectrum Elite (although not the game itself). I'm annoyed that these were once common on eBay, but that I failed to buy all the 99p copies of Elite for various platforms because I was only interested in Acorn/RISC OS versions. Stupid younger me. Now they're all as rare as fairy dust.
Some low-quality mobile phone photos attached to this message, but basically the boxes contain the following:
ArcElite: - game disc (blue, with printed sticker) - traders' notepad - ship datacards - Elite cover art poster - flight training manual (not titled on the front though).
Seems to be missing the RISC OS-specific user guide. Traders' notepad is slightly used, poster is somewhat creased and has pinholes in the corners.
ArcElite Gold: - game disc (black, printed directly onto the floppy) - traders' notepad - ship datacards - user guide - flight training manual - Elite cover art poster - keystrip - Elite shirt order form - Gold Edition sticker on front of box
These copies are otherwise identical in box type and artwork.
By way of comparison,
BBC Elite: - 1200 baud cassette tape - ship identification poster - flight training manual - copy of The Dark Wheel by Robert Holdstock - fold-out ship identification/controls summary card
Acorn Electron Elite: - 1200 baud cassette tape - flight training manual - copy of The Dark Wheel by Robert Holdstock - single-page loading instructions sheet
Some items seem to be missing, if the box text is to be believed.
The BBC and Electron boxes are functionally identical on the front (with blue Acornsoft logo for BBC, green logo for Electron), but the back of each box differs, showing a more complex screenshot for the BBC version. The text content is the same but in a different font on each box.
Finally, the Spectrum (Firebird) version, showing Order of Elite membership application card, The Dark Wheel, ship identification chart, and control guide. |

And finally, before I head to bed, a little Elite trivia. Back in 2002, when Christian Pinder was writing Elite: The New Kind and its sort-of successor, Elite: Darkness Falls, I was in touch with Pinder directly. I was following the progress of Darkness Falls and excited by his tagline ("The gateway at Raxxla swings open. The Thargoids are winning the war. Darkness falls over the Elite universe."). I got a story idea, and pitched it to Pinder - he liked it, and suggested it could be the official novella for the game, much as The Dark Wheel was for the original Elite game.
All well and lovely until the terrible copyright violation incident in 2003 which prompted David Braben to order all copies of TNK and DF siezed and destroyed, and sadly the project never came to fruition. Fortunately, I have some proof of my agreement with Pinder and of course, the final version of my completed story is still available to read online!
Pimp myself: other Elite universe stories you might like include Vendetta, based on the Zurid Pino mission from ArcElite. I have others. I even wrote some Elite-themed limericks once! |

No I don't (assuming this message was addressed to me). Possibly not:
in reply to message #120376 The "other news" is very interesting anyway. |

lastname.net Incidentally, "non-sensical" isn't a good use of a hyphen to see on a proofreading website. |

And finally I'm not entirely sure, so I might be going out on a limb suggesting this - feel free to tell me I'm wrong - but I get the impression you quite liked Elite. |

lastname.net Incidentally, "non-sensical" isn't a good use of a hyphen to see on a proofreading website. I left it there just so that you could find it and feel good about yourself. Certainly, I've never had any clients ever complain about the quality of my work; although thanks for the reminder, I should probably update or remove that website, since I haven't actually been running that business since last year. |

All well and lovely until the terrible copyright violation incident in 2003 which prompted David Braben to order all copies of TNK and DF siezed and destroyed, and sadly the project never came to fruition. I've met David on a few occasions and admire his contribution to the gaming world, but his desire for legal battles back then was somewhat excessive.
When he threatened me with legal action over a dozen STMIA instructions, I thought he'd lost the plot! It was so comical it would have been funny had it not been for the seriousness of the situation. I've not told a soul about this before, so here goes...
The STMIA instructions in question were a memory flood fill routine, for filling triangles and were allegedly identical to one he'd used in Zarch. Being a cheeky 16 year old, I hacked Zarch, ripped the triangle code out and studied it.
After a few weeks, I'd not only found a bug in his code (which I made Superior aware of), I'd also devised a quicker triangle routine which was on average 40% quicker.
I gave my improved routine to Superior for free, with timing comparisons! And from that day hence I've refused to make any money off anything I've written for the Arc and have donated it all away in disgust at the way people overreact in the Arc scene.
Sorry, somewhat of a digression from Elite. I have the original BBC Elite on floppy and the original Arc Elite...but the floppy is missing, I'm still looking for it so I can image it. |

As you know, ArcElite and Iron Lord are the two old Arc games I'm most interested in (oh, and Haunted House, must finish that site sometime) and those are the only two copies of Acorn User mag that I still keep around. However, I'm terrible with numbers - I remember they are both August issues, but I always get the years mixed up
Thanks for the correction! |
