Do I need a special cart or something for the DS to connect to my computer to transfer files across? |

Do I need a special cart or something for the DS to connect to my computer to transfer files across? What are planning on doing? What sort of files?
If you want to run homebrew, you can get a SD adapter that plugs into the GBA slot. You transfer files from your PC to the SD card using an ordinary card reader. You'll also need a NoPass DS cartridge so that the DS will run your unauthenticated programs.
(Alternatives to NoPass are a PassMe card that piggybacks a real cartridge to do the authentication, or changing the firmware so that it doesn't need to authenticate at all, but that voids your warrenty and needs a NoPass/PassMe card to run the firmware reprogrammer anyway).
That's the minimum you'll need if you want to use it as a movie player or photo viewer, or run homebrew games, or whatever.
Alternatively, when the DS-xtreme cartridge comes out, you can just use that. It's got 512MB flash memory built in, and a USB port so you don't have to keep swapping cards around, and it works as a NoPass too so you can run your homebrew programs. It's almost as expensive as the DS, though.

I want to use some homebrew games mainly, although I will be trying lots of other things too.
Where can I get this adapter? |

Where can I get this adapter? Lots of other things? Not piracy, I hope. A NoPass card, GBA flash memory adapter and flash card will cost about the same as a new DS anyway, so if you're after cheap games don't bother!
Supercard SD + Superkey: http://eng.supercard.cn/ M3 + Passcard3: http://www.m3adapter.com/main.htm
No idea where is a good place to buy them from. One of these maybe?
http://www.consoleplus.co.uk/ http://www.cheapmod.net/cat--Cartridge-Systems--cartsystems http://www.divineo.co.uk/cgi-bin/div-uk/cat_ds.html
I have no idea how reputable these are, mind.

Maybe another job for - http://http://www.desmume.com/ ?

Maybe another job for - http://http://www.desmume.com/ ? Like most of the DS emulators, it looks a bit Windows only. Quite a few have x86 assembly code in them too. I know this because I've been looking for a Mac version too; there really needs to be a good platform agnostic emulator. I still vote that Adrian writes one for us. |

Doesn't matter anyway. tlsa told me that he doesn't approve of emulation of current platforms, so I guess I'll find something else to amuse myself. I only write code for tlsa's amusement, so things involving hedgehogs, image processing or technic lego are preferred.

We've already got the compiler (at least devKitPro would be fairly easy to port) - we "just" need the emulator to test the code on. It's not like a DS emulator would kill the DS sales market anyway; it's the real hardware that makes the games so playable, and types who pirate games can manage quite well as it is anyway. |

... this would be a development tool. Then I'll wager that I'd get rapped knuckles for aiding and abetting the development of code for other, non-RISC OS platforms then |

The only reason I use a DS emulator is to play homebrew gams and applications, the commercial stuff I use with real hardware. |
