*penis explosion*
Now I can actually buy quake 2. And quake 3. And quake 4. Etc.
Also, any reason this is in the staff forum instead of games?

Because that URL was taken directly out of the Steam client, and I didn't know if it'd work/allow others to steal my games.
Plus, no Quake IV. The "everything Quake" pack only goes up to extensions of Quake III. You can get Commander Keen though (requirements - Minimum: A 100% Windows 2000/XP/Vista-compatible computer system) ________ Cheers, Rich.

Hmmm... Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition. They've got id, THQ, Eidos, Ubisoft, Capcom... Quite the games distribution hub, although I guess they're games that have been out a while. So for the publishers, it's a way of shifting more games that have already left the shops, for the gamers it's a way of picking up stuff they might have missed at a bargain price ($19.95 =~ £10), and the shops aren't pissed because it's not direct competition. Yet. ________ Cheers, Rich.

I don't think the "older games are smaller" bit comes into it - Company of Heroes is only one year old (i.e. old enough to be out of shops, but new enough to tax my ninja games machine slightly). And it's plenty big enough, as I've learnt during my multiple downloads to try and get it working after the last upgrade.
(After I'd buggered around with my machine - adding a new hard drive, copying games on to new drive, removing old drive, moving games onto new partition, installing second graphics card to handle TV out as well as second monitor, re-installed graphics drivers twice - the game starts working. Weird!) ________ Cheers, Rich.

That kind of old is what I'm talking about, none of this new-fangled DVD malarky. |

Well sure, some of the games are older, because it's the entire back catalogue; but I don't think download size has anything to do with it. Most games on Steam are DVD-era. Doom III is. ________ Cheers, Rich.

I've just looked again, and remembered Heretic/Hexen/Wolfensteins/etc. And, there's the cost of the "all id Games" pack:
Individual price $213.90 Package price $69.95 You save $143.95! *secondary penis explosion*
The fact that I only own Quake 1, Wolf 3D, and Doom 1/2/3 has now paid off
Of course, I will need to secure myself a new hard disc before starting to download it all. |

Last night I played Quake for the first time
I can't get Return to Castle Wolfenstein to run, though
(I also couldn't get Doom3 to run, but if you run Resurrection of Evil first, it fixes it so you can run Doom3)
Andy. More FPS than you can shake a stick at.
PS, it was $62 when I bought it last night. I think the introductory-offer-doodah must have run out

[Edited by andypoole at 20:33, 10/8/2007] Yes. I just started Steam and it said there was a 10% off offer until the 10th
*shakes fist at Rich [edit #2: and slaps poolie for not mentioning this yesterday]*
[edit]
Bah, $12 tax. *but* if I uninstall Doom 3 first, I have enough space to fit all the games. Yay!

Bah #2: It doesn't look like they provided MP3s (or similar) of any of the music for the games that used CD music (Although I've only looked at Quake so far, since that's the only one that's finished downloading) |

You can get Commander Keen though (requirements - Minimum: A 100% Windows 2000/XP/Vista-compatible computer system) Yeah, it looks like they're using DOSBox for all the old games. People have done this before (Sierra IIRC).
I can't get Return to Castle Wolfenstein to run, though Likewise
(and same problem with Doom 3, although that's understandable since it's the expansion pack CD key that it wants, which presumably isn't downloaded to your system until you try running the expansion pack)
Everything else seems to work, though
*hits the forums to look for any fixes* |

RTCW is working. Yay!
I'm not sure why it's working, but:
1. Added 'seta r_fullscreen 0' to autoexec.cfg, as suggested here for resolution issues. 2. Tried running, failed (but it did start in a window) 3. Decided to try getting a log of the console output, so went hunting through the Quake 1 docs (under the probably false assumption that the command would be the same) 4. Subsequently added '-condebug' to the startup options 5. Game works! 6. Changed video options to be sensible, removed r_fullscreen from autoexec.cfg, removed -condebug 7. Game still works!
So, that might fix it for you. Or maybe not.
Also be warned that the Steam version of RTCW isn't fully patched, so you may have to wait a while for Valve to update it before playing online (and there are allegedly some issues with widescreen monitors). |

The version of GLQuake they've given seems a bit dodgy. It crashes if I try using a resolution above 640x480 (And for some strange reason, selecting 640x480 actually results in 656x496, with black borders at the edge of the screen. But I've discovered that it's like that with my other copies of Quake as well, so it's presumably some driver issue)
But the good news is that I found the Nightmare skill path for the first Quake mission pack without any problems (And then died on the first level )
Also, when using GLQuake, "gl_flashblend 0" is your friend. Otherwise you get horrible ugly blotches instead of lightmap lights for explosions/muzzle flashes/etc. (it defaults to 1 because the bandwidth needed to keep the lightmaps up to date was too much for early 3D cards. But I'm not sure why they haven't changed the default setting for this release.) |
