/The/ Tom Cooper?

I've ended up with the source code for Hamsters (although the disk has a sector error on it).

For its time, I'd say the game was perfect - definately a seven thumbs-up smile

Personally, I can't think of anything that would need to be changed on it - except an update in the graphics; the general style and gameplay is fine.

^ What he said. (Except I don't have the source code for Hamsters)

Personally, I think Tom is here to get ideas for Hamsters II, which he write in order to conquer the next-gen games market.

Not sure how far you could go without diluting the main concept. Squishing cute furry things is fun!

How about more interactive environments: swivel doors, weak floors which break if you hit them too hard, making bridges from trees, hives which release bees when you knock them, etc. Powerups - maybe a giant mallet (a la New Super Mario Bros).

Multiplayer would be excellent.

If you're in a position to develop WiiWare, I'd love to see a version with Wii controls. Tilt the remote left or right to move, holder the trigger and lift it then slam it down to use the hammer. You could give extra feedback with the rumble, and play squishing sounds from the remote's speaker. I'd pay big money for 4 player Wii Hamsters!

I don't think I can lay claim to being THE Tom Cooper, that'll be the guy in the fez, I'm the other one... but yes.

Sounds like you have more of the game than I do, I had to download it to rip some of the original samples out! Alas, the music wouldn't work in my tracker player unhappy

I'm busy knocking up a version to flog on PocketPC and symbian, but I'll stick it on any platform that'll have it. There's a pc version obviously and that WiiWare stuff sounds really interesting.

The graphics are better, they're nicely hires, not tile based and I'm pondering whether to find a proper artist to sort them out.

I hadn't though of networking it... that's a top idea. I need to get it out in the next couple of months but its something I could bolt on afterwards.

Some nice stuff there Phil, cheers.

Tom

I was going to say make the landscapes 3D, but I guess the PocketPC platform rules that out.

If you want to make money, replace the cute furry animals with terrorists, and sell to the American market grin

I think the best thing about Hamsters was that it was kind of bonkers, so changing things like samples and music might detract from it. It is a while since I played it however, so I demand the right to be wrong.

I totally agree, the sound and music was spot on. The sound will be almost identical, but I'll have to get new (hopefully very similar) music.

I'm trying to stay true to the original, just make it bigger, smoother and better.

That would be Tommy Cooper instead smile

Google search for "Tom Cooper" gives Acorn Arcade interview as #1.

IMDb shows 3 Tom Coopers (although #1 appears to be Tommy).

ETA: Do you want me to see if I can recover the disk?

Nah. There's nothing from the original I can reuse, aside from the sound and its easy to rip that from the version I have.

Is there any specific format that you want it in? !TrackConv can convert between a load of different formats, so I could try converting it to an Amiga/PC tracker format if you want. I could even convert it to MP3 (although I'd assume you'd want to avoid the file size/decoding overhead if it's going to run on a phone/PDA).

Yeah, my tracker player is quite fussy. It'd be amazing to get the original music in... then I just need to get permission to use it.

My tracker player plays files in ProTracker format. If you can convert Hamsters music to that itd be amazing.

Them pesky RoboRabbits, eh?

Incidentally, your posting here has reminded me for the 100th time that I haven't converted the music for you yet. I'll get right on it!

That's looking very nice.

Will you be paying homage to Hamsters in some way (just thinking about the name)?

Looks pretty cool.

Here's a video of the original, for reference:

I won't be making any reference to the original name, it didn't really make sense. There were never any hamsters in it! I tried to draw one but it didn't work out. So this time the theme is rabbits, far more sensible.

In most respects it will be very familiar. I've made a few changes.

Gone is the intro sequence, if there is going to be one (probably wont be) I'll have it done by a comic book artist, it looked really bad.

The graphics are cleaner and much higher res. The menus are looking much better. I can zoom in and out of the scene (not shown in the video). The wibble will be coming back.

The bonus rounds are gone, I'm having speed rounds instead which is a lot better. Its a race to the finish without squishing anything.

It'll be all new music, I've found a musician for the job, hopefully it'll be great. If you can get the old music converted thats still good, I'll give it to the guy for reference.

I get to use lots of cool new techniques on account of the machine being a whole lot faster than an A3000! Transparencies are done properly, rotated sprites are easy and the editor is a milltion times better (and not using regular tiles).

Oh, and I'm now working under the name GooStudios, which seems appropriate! I'm really enjoying putting the old game back together.

I mailed it to the address in your profile. Assuming that address works wink

Good luck with the game!
