Anyone interested? I've got a card that's a close relative of this which appears to be functional in the IYONIX pc and I've managed to read drive identification, which means it's a small hop to getting a working PIO-based driver as a starting point, before moving onto DMA, large disc support etc. |

Anyone interested? Interested in expanding the range of hardware supported by RISC OS? Yes. Likely to have the time/inclination to help develop the driver? No. Likely to install a SATA card in my Iyonix at any time in the near future? No. |

Okay, I meant 'would anyone use such a thing if it existed?' The chipset in question is a Silicon Image Sil3512 which is well documented, along with their other related chips.
I notice that PATA hard drives are becoming harder to find, although I managed to get 400GB PATA and 400GB SATA drives to play with. 1TB drives seemed to be readily available in SATA format only.
BTW, FileCore currently seems to have a 256GB limit on disc size. |

BTW, FileCore currently seems to have a 256GB limit on disc size. Yes and, for added amusement, the ALi Southbridge in the Iyonix only does DMA to the bottom 128GB of that. Thus, a SATA controller driver is likely to be increasingly useful. |

Okay, I meant 'would anyone use such a thing if it existed?' In the future yes, because (as you say) PATA is becoming extinct. But at the moment I don't have any use for it. |

...although it will mean going down to 1 monitor...
unless you want to do a driver for this:

I think there are currently bigger issues than the lack of RO code if you want to use that in your IX

Got to live in hope though Have you seen.... http://wacco.mveas.com/ ? Browsing through it last night I couldn't help feeling that it has more promise in that it's progressing faster using a 'walk before you can run' approach.
As an aside, in my day job over the past year, I've learned a fair bit about Verilog, writing RTL for FPGA and ASIC synthesis and contributed sizeable bits of hardware to a production chip, so given a suitable PCB and the tools to reprogram the FPGA.... |

Okay, I meant 'would anyone use such a thing if it existed?' In the future yes, because (as you say) PATA is becoming extinct. But at the moment I don't have any use for it. Although, I do at least have a spare SATA drive now, so if you need any help testing it then I could probably stretch my wallet far enough to buy a card. It's a 500GB drive, so I'll also be able to test whatever changes get made to allow filecore to support drives >256GB. (Assuming the drive doesn't play dead again)
But I'm still a bit busy to be able to offer any time to help write the driver. |
