"does not work" ? It should work just fine, assuming the RiscPC is old enough and doesn't have a 710 or StrongARM CPU. You may need to change the boot structure, but it should still turn on and boot.

3.5 -> supports ARM610 and below, but not StrongARM
3.6 -> supports ARM710 and below, but not StrongARM
3.7 -> supports StrongARM and below

anything I can do?
Get a non-StrongARM processor?

Also be aware that OS 3.5 doesn't contain !Edit, !Paint, etc. in ROM, so you'll need a copy of the OS 3.5 disc image.

http://acorn.riscos.com/acornftp.htm

If the machine is running OK with 3.7 then it might be easiest to extract a copy of the disc image somewhere on the machine, swap the ROMs & CPU, boot the machine, then rename/move the folders around so the 3.5 boot sequence/disc image gets used the next time you boot (I believe the 3.7 disc image will work fine with 3.5 - apart from the lack of ROM apps - but the 3.5 image won't work with 3.7, so you can't downgrade the disc image before swapping the OS/CPU). Depending on how authentic you want your 3.5 machine to be you might be able to get by with just copying the apps from the Apps folder of the 3.5 disc image (assuming that's where they're stored - I'm not sure myself)

Oh, how many times we've heard quite the opposite. This is very odd.

Does your software have on-screen previews? If so, you must be curious about what the current port of RISC OS to new hardware would enable you to offer to clients, without lugging along the full laser kit. A BeagleBoard might not look as professional as a RiscPC but it's a lot smaller! I also understand that RISC OS Open appreciate donations!

Boggle. I can only start to imagine why this is. One assumes you've actually tried it on 3.6 or 3.7, or checked there's no later version of the software?

one assumes correctly. As I mentioned you lot have been most helpful. The reasons why this software will not run on 3.7 are far too complicated to discuss here. I just needed an option for this particular unit as I didnt want to just throw away. We use www.pangolin.com software now.
Thanks all

If you don't get anywhere, we'd be happy to take you up on the Arm610 for SA offer, and throw in some OS 3.50 chips if I can find any. Just so you have another option.

Don't you think it's more likely, given what Jason said above, and given that you said that 'swapping the OS does not work', that it is actually incompatible with your StrongARM and not with your OS? Especially as there were no backwards-incompatible changes in OS3.7 that I know of.

^this. IIRC there's very little difference between 3.5 and 3.6 other than the support for the newer processors and built in apps. I could be wrong on that, though. But even still, it's got to be either some really obscure or poorly written software that works on 3.5 and not 3.6.

Andy.

Most likely is that this program just isn't compatible with StrongARM.

I agree that's the most probable, in which case, downgrading a RO3.7 machine to an older ARM would work, but an actual ROM downgrade wouldn't be necessary. The only other possibility is that it ties directly into the CPU in some bizarre way, but I don't see that happening here.
