This is something I find a bit silly; unless you particularly want to waste your time clicking more things than you have to and jumping around the page (not that anybody actually bothers with this anyway, but I'm in a pedantic mood today) why do we have a little note telling us what post this is in response to - when we don't have the post number anywhere to be seen?

To exemplify:

Posted by smink at 08:00, 7/3/2003, in reply to message #36066

Maybe it should tell us which message number this is, eg:

Message #36067 Posted by smink at 08:00, 7/3/2003, in reply to message #36066

So that we are then able to see how they all interrelate at a glance, without all this silly clicking? Just a thought :)

/me edits the template.

The idea was so you don't have to start looking around for numbers, you just click on the link if you want to read the original message.

And yes I know that currently it doesn't handle messages on different pages.

Yay! :)

Although as I said in that other thread having it as a link would be nice for when you need to link to messages in other threads :)

Then it'd have to be an absolute link, which is a bit evil, and it could change - e.g. if an earlier message is deleted it might move page, so your link may then be wrong.

I might copy vB's method and allow you to use some special bbcode for linking to other messages, like [messageLink=36123]Hi there![/messageLink], that is the parsed at runtime. Which is also evil but probably the best solution. Hmm.
