Not quite what you're getting at, but perhaps a combination of TIB/Acorn Arcade's forums would be a good idea at some point, seeing as AA is being updated more frequently now
There's no *annoying* bugs in the system now, anyway. |

Oh, and the non-eating of sigs when trying out the options would be good. How about getting the options working?
I know I've had two goes now, but one is an admin section, and t'other is for regular punters. ________ Cheers, Rich.

Ability to post images
OR
smileys in signatures. I don't think image posting is wise (people tend to post huge images which everyone has no choice but to download, rather than posting a link which makes it optional), but smileys in sigs seems quite handy - if you don't have direct DB access that is ________ Cheers, Rich.

I don't think image posting is wise (people tend to post huge images which everyone has no choice but to download, rather than posting a link which makes it optional) Thats such a *weak* excuse. It took me 20 minutes to sort something out for drobe forums that basically displays a thumbnail of the desired image, which you can click through to the full thing. easy.
See: http://www.drobe.co.uk/forum/index.php?task=view_topic&topic_id=12&forum_id=4

It has nothing whatsoever to do with making excuses for the amount of time it takes to do; I just don't think it's a good idea. I've been on forums that have images in, and they're shit to use. Many forums don't allow images in the messages for exactly this reason.
Or is it just another excuse to blow your own trumpet on a rival site? ________ Cheers, Rich.

Yes I know what you're saying although I must say I'm suprised given the fast internet access yu must have. On a 56K modem I tend to turn images off to save time and money when on those kind of forums. |

If you're having speed issues with graphical content then I suggest you either upgrade to broadband, and/or check for problems with your browsers caching of objects.

Or is it just another excuse to blow your own trumpet on a rival site? Actually, it's not. You thought ranted about (on drobe comments) about the sites complementing each other nicely. You might not have seen it, but I provided you with a simple (low/high bandwidth customise the thumbnail size how you want) solution to something one of your users suggested be added to your forums.
Next time I'll know not to bother with helpful stuff. I was going to give some ideas about your avatars, but never mind. |

If you're having speed issues with graphical content then I suggest you either upgrade to broadband, and/or check for problems with your browsers caching of objects. Speed is part of the problem but it's mainly a noise issue. Particularly on forums which allow large graphics in sigs, I find it takes away the focus from the actual content quite a bit. Images are however useful for things like screenshots of problems that are being discussed.
The thumbnail method is actually quite a good idea, and one I might have to nick , but images will remain off on the TIB forums unless there's a need for them.

You thought ranted about (on drobe comments) about the sites complementing each other nicely. That was me, not Rich. I've certainly never posted anything on Drobe, ranting or no.
I've not seen the way Drobe have implemented anything forum-wise, all I'm saying is that I personally don't like images on forums. I have broadband, and a Fat Pipe at work (oo-er) but image-intensive forums still take longer to download and display than text-only ones. Caching doesn't make any difference as images in, say, b3ta (to take an extreme example) will be unique. And as Tim said, it's also an aesthetic thing, it makes the forum harder to read.
If there's any great call for it then obviously I (or, let's face it, it'll be Tim) will no doubt consider it. However, I thought I might be able to give my own opinion on a site I help run and not get flamed for it. ________ Cheers, Rich.

I know what you mean, I visit a site and half the time due to one poster all I can see when I scroll down the page is a huge sig-graphic of some obscure band called 'Marshan'
Thanks for the advice Gotai but I have thought about broadband and R ch advised as well infact about it but I can't get it at the moment.

Regarding this whole graphics in sigs/on forums thing, I think graphics in sigs are silly but avatars in sigs would be nice. As for graphics in the threads themselves, that could be handy, so long as they're non-quotable (trust me, I've seen that done on other forums). A good example of a forum which allows graphics but that is 99% text is my other regular forum, the EBBS, where people usually post graphics only where relevant. I like to think that [most] people on this board can be [moderately] sensible when it comes to posting graphics - because it affects them as well as the rest of us.
The main risk I think, as I've observed on the EBBS also, is that graphics are a problem is some idiot posts something massive and graphically intensive, but then again, surely you can put a max size definition in the display options, so it won't take up more screen than, say, 300x300 pixels or whatever, possibly with a link to the original? |

Or just make people paste links to graphics, as is possible now, advantages: everything, disadvantages: none. |
