A while back there was some talk here of starting up a Coding Competition a là CodeCraft.

I can't remember who it was that was discussing it, though.

Did anything come of this?

Among other people it was me, and no it didn't, because I didn't want to run it all by myself.

I was 'involved' as well, but more interested in entering it than running it. If anyone's planning to start one now then it might be a good idea to wait until after the exam season though ;)

I think thats the problem. I doubt there is any one suitable for running such a competition who wouldn't prefer to play instead. This was why I suggested several seperate classes run by different people. But noone else could be bothered.
I don't think the exam season would present a problem though, given that the deadlines are always months (or years) away.:)

Perhaps instead of a coding competition we should simply have a coding festival?

A week or so of programming celebrating weird and wonderful programs (i.e. demos), novel ideas and techniques, and speed-coding of certain programs. Although the quality of the design and coding may be questionable if done in too much of a hurry, there is certainly potential if it is done right.

I'm sure that in a weekend or two a suitably insane bunch of programmers could bridge the Castle/Simtec USB API gap, Iyonix-ify various classic games and programs, and write a few fun games and useful utilities. Prizes hopefully won't be needed, as it'll all be being done for the good of the platform - as well as raise the profile of programming for RISC OS and provide many tutorials on how to do certain things (WIMP, modules, networking, etc.) :)

Or am I just clutching at straws here? ;)

Now this is a really nice idea.

Were you thinking of an actual meet-up, or just a web-site/virtual link-up?
The former has several advantages, but also some serious disadvantages.

++ people (well me at least) might take a week as holiday, but probably wouldn't for just internetting.
- finding a venue and organisation would be required.
- (some cost involved but probably outweighed by point 1)
- travel, with computers. Not really feasible for people without cars. Like me. :(

Of course, we could do it in my (rather small) house, which would solve my problem, but possibly not anyone elses. When my lodger leaves I'll have a small spare room, and I also have a sofa-bed. Wouldn't make for a particularly large festival, though, unless there are other RiscOS users in or near Selly Oak, Birmingham.
Or it might be possible for people to pick each other up and take over part of a cheap hotel somewhere, out of season. This would allow an increase in scale, but at a price.

(edited to fix quoting)

Virtual link-up. Quite frankly I'm not interested enough/too lazy to go and meet someone over this, but other people are welcome to if they feel the need :o

Thats a shame because I did like the idea of having a big coding bash.

I suppose there isn't any reason why both couldn't sort of happen.

Does anyone like the idea of meeting a small number of coders and RiscOS fanatics for a few days, for coding, general discussion and (probably) getting drunk on exotic alcoholic beverages?
Requirements - Get yourself to Birmingham. Bring your own kit (ie computer + monitor) and sleeping bag (+ bed roll if more than 2 people want to play). No responsibility taken by me for your equipment, and all stuff should be labeled clearly as yours before arrival.

No great organisation intended, so come for one day or all week, whatever. But let me know vague plans beforehand. Food will be at your expense but you can cook in my kitchen if you clean up afterwards and don't make anything too involved.

Obviously being in my house you'd agree to obey my rules and not do anything unpleasant or be too rowdy, make any expensive phone-calls etc.

Results and releases hosted on the Kon bar maybe?

Anyone up for it?
Dates can be arranged to suit the interested.

Ignoring the other possibility of a coding festival for a minute, I would possibly be interested in helping out.

What kind of stuff would you be looking to farm out?

Here is the thread.

But briefly, a programmer to organise a game writing class that I could enter, someone to work with the media and try to arrange prizes from RiscOS companies, and someone responsible for the webpage.
Which would be 3 people, although potentially less if someone would do more than one of these.
I said I would manage the other classes I proposed - demo and utility classes.

Ha! ta... couldn't find that before.

Well... I reckon I could manage creating a "crap webpage" and I could probably knock up a press release kind of thing to send to the media. I'd also be willing to adjudicate (in the sense of counting votes. I don't recall how voting was done in the past; was it via email?).

If "working with the media" entails anything other than firing off a few emails however, then I'm probably not your man.

Would the kind folk at iconbar (I'm talking to you, Señor Goodwin) be willing to pollute their domain with my non-validating, mostly-deprecated-tags HTML?

I should mention at this point that I don't have *all* that much free time, so anything time-critical probably shouldn't be assigned to me. Anything that can be done well in advance, however (such as creating said crap webpage) I could probably get involved with, though.

Why not? That's what most of my sites are constructed in anyway! :)
