http://www.iconbar.com/usenet has been around for ages (Even if it's not been advertised or anything). Could do with some polishing up though |

If you think it's worth updating however... I don't really want to run a complete news server though, so it'd probably just be a web front end to view RISC OS and ArgoNet groups off the ArgoNet server.
Although they might not want non-ArgoNet subscribers reading the ArgoNet groups, in which case no ________ Cheers, Rich.

Well I wouldn't mind being able to read the Argonet news groups using my Argo details like Webmail. Hmm... well I'd not have access to your account details to verify you're an ArgoNet customer (well I probably do, but not legally ), so perhaps you could email support and suggest it? Not that I don't want to do it here, but it might be worth getting them to do it properly anyway. ________ Cheers, Rich.

Already done on Drobe - although not working!! Hmm, not really a good recommendation then
http://mynewsgroups.ods.org/ is a demo version of a PHP news reader thingy.
The problem with all the news readers I've looked at is that they want to stuff your MySQL database full of news, which sounds a bit icky. ________ Cheers, Rich.

Well they've just discovered that they can't get at them. But you have access to them don't you,.. and I seem to recall neo pulling groups from us for a while.... perhaps we can come to some arrangement, Mr Bond. ;-) |

I think it's authed on IP address, so I could have a word in someone's shell-like. They might not be happy about the whole ArgoNet-only groups viewable to the outside world thing (I think I covered that already) but I can try. ________ Cheers, Rich.

Hm, ok. Cool. Ta... although I can't quite see why whoever the powers that be would object. Hardly trade secrets being bantered about, I can only see the extra exposure doing argonet good! |

Hm, ok. Cool. Ta... although I can't quite see why whoever the powers that be would object. Hardly trade secrets being bantered about, I can only see the extra exposure doing argonet good! More to do with being a value-added service I think - they provide something that you can't get elsewhere - i.e. newsgroups private to that ISP, a kind of ArgoNet user's club. The fact that all Pipex customers could get access wasn't a problem, but at one point it was opened up to all comers and there was some complaints IIRC.
If a web site (Drobe, TIB etc.) offers complete open access to "outsiders" then it's no longer a private club; they might not want that, or might insist on read-only access from the webite. When the hangover wears off I'll ask however. ________ Cheers, Rich.

True, however you might have to be careful, as the argonet groups do actually exists on general USENET, and there have been a couple of posts to them. If you're not careful, the groups on 'proper' usenet could be posted to with derogatory comments (although people probably don't read them).
Anyway, all the newsgroups on drobe.co.uk are view-only. we don't allow posting |

I've asked the sysadmins to look into this, although seeing as #1 sysadmin is working from home for the rest of the week and #2 sysadmin is on holiday it's difficult to get anything done ATM
Edit: Should be done. Apparently our #1 sysadmin has a problem with cut and paste ________ Cheers, Rich.
