Good idea. You could also have people that wont to chat to other people that have RiscOS, and not just about machines. Or have a random button on so you will make new friends easily. There was one for the acorn users but it has seems to have disappeared. I do believe it was called The OakTree, I got nothing back from them when I tried a few times.

Again this forum is going off the beaten track of its first question. These forums are supposed to keep each and everyone communicating. Not haw board your are with a machine. The one Steve suggested was a good idea, and the follow up coulomb. The one on the bottom of http://www.drobe.co.uk/user/message/index.phtml, instant message is what I was on about. But the list of people that has just come on site could do with a bit moor people on it. Or a public / personal chat room that can be provided. There you are then. I’ve started suggesting other web sites to go to, Not that I want to discourage people from using iconbar.com. I think it’s a brilliant site and there should be a lot more sites like it. |

Yeah, frankly I have a tough time just keeping mail coming into the main staff at iconbar.com (recent change to config broke it for a couple of days, power cuts, Pipex routing problems...) I do however have a few spare domains I'm not yet using. I registered (IIRC) riscosplayer.com and .net a while back, with a view of having some sort of system where you can easily find other RISC OS user's machines so you can play net Doom etc. (getting around dynamic IP addresses by having subdomains that update every five minutes fed by something on your machine that uploads your current IP). Maybe I could open that domain to the "public" later on, when I've finished the proposed upgrades (read: replacement) of the current computer iconbar.com's hosted on. I might even get the subdomaining system working...? |

I only know haw to press buttons on this PC. I know a lot and little basic programming on the riscos. I only ment to say the first sentence.

Yeah but its useful for the community to get ideas such as this flowing. I am a pretty hardcore online gamer and software like Wireplay helps find people a lot - you guys have no such program and it would promote gamesplaying on the platform to have such a resource. And after all, there IS a link between successful platforms and vast amounts of games - would the PC be so good if it was *still* a business machine?? Hope I've opened another can of worms, TTFN, 242 |

I think this is the forum for suggestions and things, so I reckon why not try and have an iconbar email service?!? you could get steve@iconbar.com or whatever, or maybe just a link to hotmail taht people could use. An email service (I have no idea how easy it is to set up) would increase traffic to the site and introduce the possibility of advertising etc, from which you could get revenue for other things. You don't have to take this post seriously, it's just if i see a quiet Forum I just have to post on it 242 |

This is more Rich's area than mine, but I can't really see it happening. acornusers.org do an email forwarding service for a fiver a year, so if you want a fancy email address have a look there . |

Maybe because of the lack of new games and other applications? Some of the applications and games are quite good, some even excellent but very few have been developed for quite a while - I for one can get pretty bored with that. Then again, what do I know of Steve getting bored Gulli [Edited by Gulli at 18:17, 10/10/2000]

I personally think that Richards idea for riscosplayer.com as a rendezvous point for people to find out IP addresses and the like for playing net games is excellent. A lack of general infrastructure is probably one of the reasons why RISC OS network gaming hasn't really taken off (along with a lack of networked games of course - but at the moment it's more trouble than it's perhaps worth). Then all we need is a way to overcome bandwidth limitations - anyone fancy hosting a broadcast server...... This is seriously off topic isn't it?
