Unregistered user How about a chart showing what browsers are being used to access
TIB? Would probably need two charts, one for 8am to 6pm weekdays
and one for the rest of the time.

Unregistered user I doubt it'd work, as many Fresco and Oregano users will probably be using a fake user agent so they can get into MIE and Netscape-only sites.

Unregistered user Is the os the browser is running on available? If so is this faked as well?

This is usually part of the user agent, so yes (to both).

Unregistered user The line
<object data="test.spr" type ="image/x-riscos-sprite"> Not Fresco </object>
Displays a sprite for Fresco (Offline version supplied on AU CDs) On all other RO browsers, Netscape and Fresco on Bush Internet TV, displays the text. IE 3 displays nothing, IE5 thinks about it then displays the text. Could this be used on a counter to confirm the identity of a browser?

Unregistered user No, as there is no way of recording what the browser displayed.

Unregistered user If I understand how the tag works, you could put an alternative image in between the tags and record which was image downloaded.

Unregistered user Very clever, by seeing how many sprites are downloaded we get the riscos count. The alternate downloads would give the IE/Netscrape count. Or just have a jpeg and a sprite and riscos users =sprites downloaded, non riscos =jpegs-sprites downloaded. Hmm, still wouldn't show browsers - distinguish Oregano/Fresco, but it could give an OS count I think

Unregistered user I can't think of anyway of doing a browser count from that other than by analysing several megabytes of server logs on a regular basis (which we're not going to do).

The browser usage for December from the user agents (see above), is as follows:

1 54.25% Micro$oft Internet Exploder
2 7.43% Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows 98)
3 6.77% Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; Windows 98; DigExt)
4 3.96% Mozilla/4.72 [en] (Compatible; RISC OS 4.02; Oregano 1.10)
5 2.96% Mozilla/4.00 [en] (Compatible; RISC OS 4.02; MSIE 5.01; Windo
6 2.68% Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows NT 4.0)
7 2.30% Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows NT 5.0)
8 2.29% Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows NT)
9 1.97% PHP/3.0.16
10 1.83% Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows 98; Win 9x 4.90)
11 1.75% Mozilla/3.01 (compatible;)
12 1.74% Mozilla/4.00 (compatible; MSIE 5.00; Windows 98)
13 1.72% Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; Windows NT; DigExt)
14 1.58% Mozilla/4.01 (Compatible; Acorn Browse 2.07 [12 Oct 1998]; RI
15 1.54% Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows 95)

I'm guessing that "Micro$oft Internet Exploder" is either some automated fetcher with a funny user agent string or something like AntUtils altering the browser's default...?

The PHP one in the list is the requests for the TIB latest headlines file from Acorn Arcade.

Unregistered user Our stats is set to only show up the top 15 user agents, to WebsterXL is probably just outside that range.

Unregistered user A sprite counter wouldn't work. Although only RISC OS browsers can display it, all browsers will still download the file - it's only when it's downloaded that they realise they can't handle it.

Unregistered user If a sprite counter used the object tag and an alternative Gif was used between the tags, I think only fresco would download just the sprite.I think all other browsers would either just download the gif or both.
Probably not worth the work though, since it wouldn't detect oregano.
