The software sections of the PDA and WAP sites wouldn't have worked since I moved the software stuff over to database storage. I've fixed this by creating a new plain text feed which use Apache redirects to map to the old text files, and switched the CGIs from text access to a web fetch.

The simple HTML feed has been updated to use the short description of the type of program as part of the headline. I haven't been able to test WAP, as I no longer have a suitable phone.

Visiting wap.iconbar.co.uk gives a basic index page ("Welcome to the IconBar WAP service" with links for news, Acorn Arcade, Updated software, New software, Media Watch and Site update news.

With the exception of Site update news, selecting any of those links gives a blank page. Site update news gives a news item dated 11/1/01 ("After making sure that both WML and cHTML sites can co-exist..." )

HTH

(www.iconbar.co.uk works well enough on my phone anyway)

Bah, for some reason it didn't have the same file fetch code in the WAP version, despite the fact that both versions are based on the same code :( And because of the "clever" redirects that don't allow non-WAP stuff to access it, I couldn't see.

And it turns out my iMode phone is, in fact, capable of displaying WAP sites.

Now fixed.

Oh, OK. Well I was asking if you could please set up a picodrive.acornarcade.com subdomain.

PicoDrive is a MegaDrive emulator that's being ported to RISC OS. Most discussion is happening on:
http://www.iconbar.com/forums/viewthread.php?threadid=7853&page=6

I would like to make a web site for the emulator, with download, version history, background information, documentation, screenshots, game compatibility and some short reviews of top games. There would be no ROMs hosted there, of course, and no links to ROM sites. (Unless I find some nice freeware / homebrew ROMs.)

Phlamethrower and Adrianl would need access too.

It is done. Phlamey should have the details RSN - not that I don't trust you, it's just that I had his email address to hand, so he got typed in as the default addressee.

He can be pointed at this thread if he doesn't already know it's OK to pass out the FTP details to you and Adrian.

Should pda.iconbar.com be different to the main site? It looks the same on my PDA...

(Works though - graphics are a bit on the large size for the screen!)

pda.iconbar.com appears to redirect to the main site, which might explain the similarity you're seeing...

Presumably the PDA in question is using a browser that the site's detection code can't tell from a "real" computer and browsers, so it's moving you to the big boy's website rather than the watered down version.

Get me the full user agent and I might update the detection code. I haven't touched it in about 5 years.

According to my weblogs, it's:

HPiPAQhw6900/1.0/Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; PPC; 240x240)

(yes, it's 240x240 :) ).

It was a free phone, and has GPS, GPRS, 802.11b, and bluetooth.

Oh, and a qwerty keyboard.

No matter how free or QWERTY it was, it doesn't make up for the fact that it uses Windows CE :P

Well, we were allowed to choose a free mobile from Vodafone's list, and I looked for one that:

1) Had GPRS
2) Had 802.11b
3) Would talk to our intranet server
4) Was as expensive as possible ("They'd never let me have one" was what I thought)
5) Was NOT a Symbian device

This was the one that was the closest.

I'm actually quite happy with it - I wasn't after GPS (and I didn't know it had it until it arrived). Okay, I've done a single battery removal/insertion in the time I've had it, but it works fairly well.

I'm not able to test it, but I've kludged something in that may/may not enable you to view the simple HTML site.

Is there a need to sniff user agents and redirect to the full site? If you're going to pda.iconbar.com, you obviously want the PDA version, right?

Wrong. Because there's one for PDAs, one for WML, and the main site for proper computers. Plus other stuff like whether the browser can handle graphics, colours etc.

The fact is that the simple_html Perl script is a bigger drain on server resources (watch the load average go right up when someone uses AvantGo to snarf the whole simple html site), so people should be redirected to the main site as much as possible anyway. At least until the PHP version of the feeds is finished.

Fair enough. Add it to the list of secret things to do.

I've never even seen the PDA version of the site... :o

It's already there. I got it to feed simple HTML before I got anywhere near RSS 0.9, because it was a simple matter of dumping the DB output straight to the page ;)

Okay - "old" being the new site, but not a PDA version (I don't think you've done anything with this yet though, so there's no urgency).
