If we keep this going it'll look like there's some big secret that only the select few know about, then we can adopt a high handed attitude to "outsiders". It'll be just like drobe.co.uk. wink

The e-mail hasn't arrived yet. Andrew, did you send it to the account related to www.boddie.org.uk (not giving the name explicitly to avoid spam)?

No problem, I'll just ask now anyway. Sorry to ruin the mystique gentsgrin. I was just going to say I've found an Elk Exile solution, I don't know if you've got it?

Among other things the screen display was smaller (they used the "black" areas to store data) and it used "EOR" sprite plotting rather than true sprite plotting.

They might also have used less colours, I can't remember. It was damn impressive though.

I'll have to try emulating that, at some point smile

For a machine considered a 'faliure', there was an awful amount of software/hardware released for it.

I heard that the BBC version also used EOR sprite plotting but got away with it thanks to a clever choice of palette in MODE 2. Was the "logical" display area (number of pixels) actually smaller than on the BBC?

Yes, it was another MODE 5 release, but amazing given the limitations of the machine. It plays more or less like the BBC version.

Get hold of ElectrEm (electrem.emuunlim.com), if you've got access to Windows or Linux. Strangely, one of the versions of Exile I have appears to have been mangled in some way, resulting in some fairly docile fireballs. This makes parts of the game a lot easier, I can tell you. smile

You're right about the software. I often wondered how much of its "failure" was just perception on the part of the press.

Check out the Exile site - David provided lots of animations - note the different colours! I was thinking of cataloguing all game objects at one point and comparing them between the two but I can't get the Electron UEF files to work unhappy

Maybe I should also have provided some single
frames from the animations for browsing purposes. It would be useful to use such pictures on the screenshots page as links to the full animations, which can be displayed in another window if required.

Do you need the files extracting from them and putting into a RISC OS friendly zip archive?

Yes I remember you saying about the links to the animations as it takes a long time to download.

The problem was even when extracted the tapes will not work as they're assuming a tape filing system but 6502em and Beebit do not operate like that I don't think. Hence why they do things like CHAIN"" which just does nothing and the game won't load.

I could ask Michael Foot about this as his Beebit loads disc images but he always seems eager for feedback to his freeware emulator.
Genius that bloke! smile
