In light of the new TEK news, I've been wondering - how do you go about setting up a movie team for a computer game?
Contacts I suppose :-)

Okay, any body interested in acting out a part for us? Maybe sometime in March we can organise something.

The part about the digital camera was a joke. They'd never let me walk out the dept with it

But you regularly use the costume shop? ;-)

Seriously though, if anybody was interested VOTI could perhaps look into organising this subject to wha Nathan thinks. Basically, it would come down to time and money I'd think. It would have to be done on a shoestring and with volunteers willing to do something without payment.

The major problem will be to port it to RISC OS. You can do this in FLI format but it contains no sound.

if you could get each frame as a seperate image, then you could then turn it into replay, and add the sound to at the same time.
otherwise, couldnt you play the sound at the same time as the FLI, or would that cause too many synch problems and eat up processing power?
What would the movies be for???

Replay would require the services of a commercial company I believe which woud be very expensive.
The movies would be films for the game like the Iron Dignity one and the early TEK film.
It would be fun to do but as I say time consuming and also it seems very difficult and/or expensive to get onto RISC OS.

Yes, why not?
For instance if anybody has any acting talent and an interest in the gaming market then something could be arranged with a Camcorder I suppose.

They might even be better looking than me ;-)

Yes. Good I look foward to it Mark. The graphics have improved and also there are several routines waiting to be put in the game and a couple already in there. I think I sent you one example, but I'll try to send a screenshot as I said.

Looking at the preview movie on the I-D site they've used a pretty professional-looking setup - a proper studio using a blue screen (green screen? smile ) process for computer-rendered backdrops; the mean-looking military dude sounds like a proper American actor; and there's evidence of several other actors (including prerequisite babe). I very much doubt any RISC OS only games programmer could afford a setup like that - I-D is supposedly a RISC OS, Windows, Mac and Linux release judging by the logos on the home page.
OTOH it shouldn't stop people with a camcorder giving a few simple scenes a go. There are, IIRC, some replay converters kicking around - a bit crude and CLI based, but it's probably
do-able.

So no offers then?

Oh well, I'll have to track VOTI members down with a camera ;-)

sounds a good idea, it'd be worth writing storylines/scripts & that kind of stuff first though

Hey kids!
My name's Denz. I have an interest in the RiscOS gaming market, and my fair share of acting talent. smile I'm up for just about any video jocularities in the name of quality games. Can't guarantee how beautiful I am, though...

That's a point - we'd better start getting URLs of photos before we start inviting any old dog to be in our games! wink

Unfortunately, I don't think there'd be much chance to how any acting skills. It would just be a few short clips and shots mixed with mainly CGI scenes.

Can I just say that live vid clips are just about the tackiest thing you can put in a game? Closely followed by cgi stuff. And mixing the two is dangerously over-board.

On the one hand the purpose of these scenes is to tell more of the story, but on the other hand they pull the player right out of the game world. And if they're not done well, they'll ruin the game in a vicous, biting cloud of ultimate cheese.

No matter how 'low-spec' the in-game gfx engine is, in-game engine scenes are surely the way to go. The player has already gotten used to theses gfx and is happy with them. Anything told to him using it will seem to apply more directly to the player.

Anyway, just my opinion of course, but I'd say you can do 1000x more damage with a bit of video footage than you can by not having any scenes at all.

Well I for one would not like games players bitten by a viscious ultimate cheese-cloud ;-)

The clips we would do would be for an introduction. Any in-game cut-scenes would be pre-rendered and limited to parts which could not be rendered using a game engine for there isn't a 3d engine in the current game at least at the moment.

I'm hoping we will use the cut-scenes at strategic points to enhance the storyline rather than detracting from it.
In Exodus for example which is a bug influence, the pre-rendered scenes enhance the atmosphere incredibly and for example show events on a planet or in space that could not be represented otherwise by the game 'engine'.
So far from being 'tacky' and a spoiling factor careful use in the right hands should lift the game.
