As subscribers to the comp.sys.acorn.misc newsgroups and RISC OS Select mailing list may have noticed, there's been a fair bit of debate recently about the lack of an up to date web browser for RISC OS. So, the man of many porting talents Peter Naulls has written an informative article outlining the problems we have with browsers and possible ways forward to resolve them. You can read all about it at his website Giving feedback to Peter regarding his article would probably be a good idea as I don't think he's had much response to it yet. I like the idea of porting a used browser to ROS, and by itself, the browser having its own look is not a real problem imo. However, I think the aim should always be to have a native ROS browser, which blends in with the ROS functionalities.. but for starters, a raw port should be seriously considered. /* I am actually wondering why the native ROS browsers are not finished? Why is there total chaos in ROS browser land, while even more obscure OS-es have a decent browser. Is it just a money factor? Wouldn't it be feasible to get hands on the sources of one of the native browsers, and go from there? Or like AW does with Artworks, write 'plugins' that override the original functionality? Or is the software (the source aspect) so crap that there is no other way than to throw away and start over.. oh well, this is beside the point I guess. */ Just an idea, but wouldn't it be reasonable you knocked on ROS Ltds' door and ask for (financial) support? (if you haven't done so already).. Since they also seem to be eager to have a good browser, there might be some actions.. e.g. you port the browser engine, they work on the ROS UI stuff.. I'd be willing to support your cause, but I would like to know more details, technical and planning wise. e.g. which donor browser will you use, when do you expect to deliver, what, etc.. |

Financial support is hard to find. I know, I've been looking instead of posting news reports like I should have ;) |
