...what I want to know is, are there any for the Archimedes? Beyond Cannon Fodder and Dune II, which I have played to the death and are getting quite dated. I am currently halfway through Syndicate which is the next closest thing, and have also finished Exodus... I need more! I really can't afford a PC and besides, I don't have enough room space/sockets, and my PC card is sadly not powerful enough to run games like that at anything approaching playability. Help?

If you can wait about a month, then hopefully you can buy TEK in time for Xmas as many others here.

How did you finish Exodus?

With difficulty...

...and a lot of perseverence. Well, there are a load of little hints and tips scattered around, but basically it's common sense... don't spread your forces too thin, sell lots of plutonium on volcano planets etc... the tips on this site (http://acornarcade.com/gamesupport/exodus/hints.html) are quite handy (I wouldn't have thought of the robots, for example) and for the utterly desperate, there is a cheat mode... but be warned, if you use the cheat mode you aren't allowed to finish the game!

If i remember correctly much of the game was written in Basic, so if you're careful with making a backup, there's a few variables in the code or !RunImage that you can change which should make cash a little more available monkey plus a few other things

How dare you! Messing around with the Exodus code! The !RunImage from Exodus is crunched and run through an "App" creator, so it won't be easy, be warned! :-)
And where's the fun if you've cheated? :-)

Cheers,

Erk. I've done the same, with the aim of doing a little bit of tweaking, not that I ever got much done. Great game, though. I love it.

Aye, it's got plenty of potential in it, which is what makes a great game. Which is why some people still haven't left the Elite universe.

I should have pushed the "glare at Jan at Wakefield last year" incident further until he agreed to continue with it just to leave him alone smile But what with TEK etc. in progress I think I'll forgive that one. smile

In what way do you mean that people have still not left the Elite universe - player's, programmers??

The existance of TNK would suggest bother. There's quite a thriving Elite community, although it's mostly centred around FE2 and FFE (with one or two original Elite diehards such as myself keeping that voice alive).

It's not a huge following, admittedly. Most of the really serious bugs eventually got fixed. Someone even got it working on Linux, albeit still tied to the same processor.

It's in C isn't it and cheaply available from Frontier developments?
Maybe a C-coder around here could convert it, but only after F16 for RComp ;-)

Unfortunately not - they've still not got around to doing anything with the source.

That's a shame. I thought there was an Elite club where you paid to get the source yourself?

I agree with your point though, there's seomthing compelling about the whole atmosphere of an Elte-type environment.

There is, but all they've done so far is make the games available. They kept talking about the code for ages, but everyone has given up believing anything they say about it by now.

The compelling thing is enough to make sad people like me write the odd story, but that seems to be dying out now. There are a few on my site.

How about an Exodus prequel, where you have to rise up from the slums and organise the capture of the starship?

Maybe change the graphics to Chaos Engine to get a kind of Commando/Saigon -style game although there wouldn't be much strategy just arcade action.

How about an Exodus sequel, the completion sequence leaves the story wide open Now that is a game I would love to play. The story could be, after you've established your empire a mystery race of powerful beings attemp to take it over. The thing I liked about Exodus was it's lastability, it took me a month of practically non stop playing to complete, although at least I didn't cheat!!

I find it impossible to keep racing between planets to do routine maintenance to stop them decaying / been taken over.

over.

What do you mean?
If you're talking about the planet you can view that no matter what system your in.

Okay, heres some of my tips,

1. Find someone to trade with and sell 25 transportes, you won't need them and the'll give you enough capital to start building a decent planet.
2. Try to colonise a volcano planet first, they require only half as much plutonium, allowing you to build up an army or mine without having to build so much Plutonium.
3. If you have lots of things to trade such as minerals, plutonium etc then build a trading centre, it will pay off!!!
4. build a lunar base as soon as you can these are potent enough to fend off an attack force in the early game.
5. try to ally with someone, as this can produce great benefits, but not the Yu'kon their tighfisted gits and vary rarely help you in a fight.

hope this helps.

sorry if this message appears a bit funny Webster XL does appear to struggle :-(
