Acorn Arcade forums: News and features: Google announces open-source project repository

Search behemoth Google has opened a new area for hosting open source projects. The site seems to be a simple Subversion-based hosting service with few bells and whistles, which seems unlikely to trouble established sites like SourceForge. However, in an article on NewForge, Google geek and Apache Software Foundation chairman Greg Stein is quoted as saying "We really like SourceForge, and we don't want to hurt SourceForge" or take away projects. In fact, to protect stuff on SourceForge, if a project name appears there it can't be added to the Google system without approval from the project owner. It appears that the idea is just to make better use of Google's massive infrastructure, and help the smaller endeavours out there. You won't be able to host a website with them, and currently people can't even download files, but the latter at least will be resolved RSN. So, for all you budding programmers out there, at least the excuse of "I don't have anywhere to host the project" shouldn't be stopping you.

Suppose you were an idiot. Suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.

Plus unlike the original post, this is on topic and RISC OS ;-) |

TIB and Drobe also host projects, but self agrandisement is so cheap :p As for the article not being "on topic and RISC OS", are you telling me RISC OS peeps don't host projects on this type of service? How about Netsurf? RISC OS Samba server? Printers+? These services are obviously of use to RISC OS users. Wow, two comments in and one's a diss for not enough news, and one's a diss because we actually found some. |

No diss, just a bit of fun poking. Anyway: NetSurf - only partially hosted on SF, due to its downtimes and poor handling of mailing lists, etc. NS developers are better to comment on this. Printers+ - in a kind of legal limbo, and the last developer to work on this sadly passed away a few years ago. SMBSever - hosted now, guess where. Ok, it's not obvious from the SF page, but that will very soon refer to riscos.info once I have everything going. Yes, of course SF has been of use in the past, but riscos.info hosting has only been available since March or so, and it's nice to have stuff on a RISC OS focussed site, especially now we see source for stuff appearing where the author has lost interest some time ago. |

Seems to me that this service is still pretty flaky. Certainly, the first link I clicked on presented me with a server error and I gave up pretty soon after that. If you're going to develop software, the first thing you want is for the provider not to screw your source repository up. This is the latest in google's slew of not-quite-finished-yet applications, and it doesn't fill me with much confidence. |

The NetSurf project currently only use SourceForge for website hosting and for the user mailing list. The development mailing list, Subversion repository, and build daemons are hosted elsewhere. I'd like to see SourceForge dropped for website hosting, too. It's just too unreliable. |

rich: There's certainly plenty of news that's more directly related to RISC OS that TIB has completely failed to cover, however. |

In reply to nunfetishist: True there have been items that the IB hasn't covered but then I tend to find they are covered on (If I may use the word here) Drobe and the same can be seen the other way. I there for tend to think (maybe nievely) that the IB editors are trying to avoid duplication as is all to previlant in the media. Although this does assume that like myself people look at the many news sites IB, Drobe, et al. jmason |

Admitably I use both portals for the news, and TIB for the forums. |
