Following a recent
discussion in our
forums, Simon Wilson has announced his
plans for a driver for TV cards for the
IYONIX. The driver will run a range of cards (those with the Conexant BT848/849/878/879 chip; although only 3.3V or Universal voltage cards are compatible with the IYONIX's PCI bus) - Simon suggests the
Pinnacle PCTV Rave card, which you can buy for £29.99. The RISC OS driver is based on the
bttv Linux driver; therefore, it will be released under the
GPL, and will be free of charge.
The driver is not currently avaliable, although it is in testing. Video overlay, frame capturing, and tuner control are already working, with a nice WIMP frontend in the works - see Simon's site for more details on the specifications and features. This development is obviously a very important one, and provides features that in latter years many RISC OS users will have resorted to Windows or Linux for. We'll update you when the driver is released.
Incidentally, Simon is looking for someone with an IYONIX in the UK to help test the driver for PAL broadcasts; e-mail him at the address on the bottom of the page if you can help.
Source: Simon Wilson
UPDATE (16/7/03): Development continues apace. Horizontal and vertical scaling are now implemented within the desktop. PAL is now supported, and is currently in alpha-testing - after that, tuning for UK broadcasts will be implemented. Check Simon's site for the latest development details and screengrabs.

I've been maybe pestering Simon a little bit, so I'd just like to say thanks for his work as it was something that was important for me to be acheived before I could buy my Iyonix. |

This will be a huge help to me when I get my IYONIX; it's one thing I thought I wouldn't happen, and it has. Absolutely brilliant work, and it's progressing so quickly, too. |

TV cards are not something which I would really need, but at £30 I would certainly buy one if I had an Iyonix, this is really great work and does make the Iyonix more appealing than before. |

This is great news, especially as I still use Windows for TV capture. I may not have to soon... |

I've received an offer for help with testing the driver with PAL broadcasts from someone in the Netherlands. I still need someone in the UK though - so please, let me know. :o) |

I'd like to help, but I don't have an Iyonix, and everytime I think about buying one I feel kind of weak in the knees and a bit dizzy, that's what it's like being a scotsman spending money, it's no joke! |

There's now a screenshot on the project website of the first test of the Wimp application. The tuner wasn't locked onto the channel signal, hence the bad picture. I will take a shot of the TV card capturing from a DVD player soon. |

Urgh... after a whole day's work and then four hours of graft on the TV card driver, I've finally got the sound output working, so I can actually watch the Simpsons with sound! |

"... after a whole day's work and then four hours of graft on the TV card driver, I've finally got the sound output working, so I can actually watch the Simpsons with sound!" Like the episode where Homer sets up a dotcom business. Despite the fact that it doesn't actually do anything, he receives a visit from Bill Gates (who is not voiced by himself!) and two heavies who proceed to "buy him out". "I didn't get to be the richest man in the world by signing cheques!" Martyn |

The Simpsons episode with "Angry Dad" and the dot-com cartoon site is also pretty amusing. So much for the demise of television... |

I'm currently collecting Divx's of Simpsons episodes (along with any good films) as I'm a minimalist freak and don't like physical things (CDs, DVDs, books) sitting around. I'm collecting for the day when my Iyonix arrives - by the time I can afford it, it should be enough time for Cineroma to be publically available ;) |

If capturing worked, then it would let us make a Tivo recording style thing, that would rule! Iyonixes come with big-ass hard disks too, plenty of room for MPEGs of TV shows and stuff. Again, brilliant work, Simon. |

It's just the MPEG encoding that would be taxing for the processor. It's very easy to capture single or multiple uncompressed frames, but a built-in MPEG encoder (like some cards have) would be great for recording broadcasts. And I wonder if cards with MPEG decoders on board to decode digital video streams could be used to decode MPEGs off the hard disc. |

Hi Simon, the on-board MPEG2 decoders of the TechnoTrend Premium based DVB cards can indeed be used for "general" MPEG2 decoding. Many of the alternative DVB software packages allow access to it, e.g. by providing an in-built DVD player... Unfortunately, I know of no DVB board with inbuilt MPEG2 decoder which is Iyonix compatible. |
